Centrus ships first new centrifuge from Oak Ridge to Ohio
First new enrichment capacity in Ohio is expected online in 2029; Oak Ridge is being converted to build thousands of centrifuges.

Key facts
- First centrifuge completed and shipped ahead of Centrus' previously announced year-end target
- $560 million committed in January 2026 to convert Oak Ridge into a high-rate manufacturing plant
- Centrus completed its acquisition of Westerman Holdings, a centrifuge casing supplier, earlier in October
- Existing Ohio cascade has produced HALEU since late 2023, logging more than 4 million machine-hours
- Oak Ridge is the only US plant making advanced centrifuges; other commercial centrifuge technology is built overseas
The first new centrifuge built at Centrus Energy's Oak Ridge, Tennessee, plant was completed and shipped to Ohio on October 29, part of a multibillion-dollar expansion of the company's uranium enrichment capacity. Completed centrifuges manufactured in Tennessee go to Ohio for final assembly, with the manufacturing rate rising over time. Centrus said the first machine and the completed manufacturing supply chain both arrived ahead of its previously announced year-end target.
The expansion covers large-scale production of LEU for the existing reactor fleet, HALEU for next-generation reactors and enrichment for national security needs. Centrus said the first new capacity is expected to come online in Ohio in 2029.
Centrus restarted centrifuge manufacturing at Oak Ridge in December 2025. In January 2026 it announced a $560 million investment to expand and modernize the Oak Ridge Technology and Manufacturing Center, converting it to a high-rate plant capable of supporting production of thousands of advanced centrifuges. The company said it has contracted a network of domestic suppliers and ordered tens of thousands of parts from American manufacturers.
Earlier in October, Centrus completed its acquisition of Westerman Holdings, a supplier of centrifuge casings and other components.
The existing Ohio cascade includes components manufactured in 2019 and in prior years, and has produced HALEU since late 2023, with more than four million machine-hours of operation. Centrus said Oak Ridge is the only advanced centrifuge manufacturing plant in the United States using technology in commercial operation, and that all other centrifuge technologies in commercial operation are manufactured overseas.
