The first safety-related concrete was poured for the reactor building of unit 5 at the Haiyang nuclear power plant on October 31, China Nuclear Industry 24 Construction Co Ltd (CNNC 24) said. The pour for the unit’s nuclear island is about 6,626 cubic metres and is expected to take nearly 62 hours, the China National Nuclear Corporation subsidiary said. State Power Investment Corporation contracted CNNC 24 to carry out civil construction of the nuclear islands for Haiyang Phase III, units 5 and 6. Unit 5 is the fifth of six large pressurized water reactors planned for the site.

The State Council approved construction of the two units on April 27, 2025. The National Nuclear Safety Administration has issued construction permits for the two CAP1000 reactors, the Chinese version of the Westinghouse AP1000.

Haiyang is in Shandong province. Its Phase I comprises two AP1000 units that entered commercial operation in October 2018 and January 2019. Construction of two CAP1000 reactors as Phase II began in July 2022 and April 2025; both are scheduled to be fully operational in 2027.
