  • Extension agreement is subject to finalisation, expected later this year

Framatome and EDF have renewed their long-term service agreement covering maintenance and outage work at the Sizewell B nuclear power plant in Suffolk, England. The renewal runs through 2040, a 15-year term.

Framatome, which has maintained Sizewell B since 2008, will deliver reactor and steam generator services, maintenance of reactor coolant pumps and valves, and non-destructive examinations. The scope also covers supply chain coordination and outage staff management. UK-based teams will carry out the work with support from resources in France, Germany and the US, Framatome said.

Sizewell B is the UK's only PWR, with an installed capacity of 1,198 MW. It came online in 1995 with an initial 40-year operating life to 2035. In July the UK government and EDF agreed financing terms for a 20-year lifetime extension, under which EDF will fund GBP800 million (USD1 billion) of refurbishment carried out during planned outages over the next 15 years. That agreement is subject to finalisation, expected later this year.

The plant has produced more than 270 terawatt-hours of electricity since 1995 and employs about 900 people.
