Key facts

  • Palisades Energy (Holtec) filed the license amendment request
  • NRC review confirmed the transfer can be carried out safely and within regulations
  • Approved October 13; NRC released the decision on October 14

The NRC approved a license amendment on October 13 allowing Palisades Energy to use custom equipment and procedures to move a tilted nuclear fuel assembly from the reactor core to the spent fuel pool. The agency announced the approval on October 14, a day after it was granted.

The NRC said its review confirmed the activity can be carried out safely and in compliance with NRC regulatory requirements.

Palisades Energy, which the NRC identifies with Holtec, requested the amendment. The approval covers one fuel assembly that is not sitting upright in the core, and it authorizes custom equipment and procedures for moving that assembly out of the core and into the spent fuel pool.
