Rosatom said on October 28 that the initial fuel load for unit 2 of the Rooppur nuclear power plant in Bangladesh has been delivered. The fuel assemblies arrived by cargo plane and then by road, and are now in a specialised storage facility.
The assemblies were produced at the Novosibirsk Chemical Concentrates Plant, part of Rosatom's fuel division TVEL. Rosatom said all items undergo mandatory incoming inspection, including visual and instrumental testing, to confirm compliance with technical documentation requirements. The inspection team is made up of Bangladeshi experts and representatives of the general contractor and the manufacturer.
Rosatom signed an agreement in February 2011 to build two reactors at Rooppur, about 160 kilometres from Dhaka, for the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission. The initial contract for the project, worth $12.65 billion, was signed in December 2015. Construction of unit 1 began in November 2017 and of unit 2 in July 2018.
Earlier this autumn, fuel was delivered from Siberia for the first refuelling of unit 1, which will take place after the reactor completes its initial one-year fuel cycle.
