Key facts

  • Discharge started by TEPCO in August 2023; IAEA safety review still ongoing
  • Sampling team: China Institute for Radiation Protection, KINS, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Spiez Laboratory
  • Samples to be analyzed by participating laboratories, the IAEA and TEPCO
  • Additional Measures cover water before and after seawater dilution, plus seawater and fish near the site
  • Participating labs are ALMERA network members selected for analytical expertise

An IAEA-led group of international experts independently sampled ALPS-treated water at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station on October 7, the twelfth sampling conducted under the Additional Measures. The sampling covers ALPS-treated water after dilution with seawater at the site.

The experts — from the China Institute for Radiation Protection, the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety, Lomonosov Moscow State University in Russia and the Spiez Laboratory in Switzerland — collected samples of the 24th batch of ALPS-treated water. That batch began discharging on October 5, after dilution with seawater at the site, alongside experts from the IAEA's Fukushima laboratory.

Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings began discharging ALPS-treated water in August 2023. The discharge remains subject to an ongoing IAEA safety review of compliance with international safety standards.

The IAEA began the Additional Measures in October 2024. They cover ALPS-treated water before dilution with seawater, ALPS-treated water after dilution, and sampling of seawater and fish near the site.

The samples will be analyzed by the participating laboratories, the IAEA and TEPCO. The international laboratories are members of the IAEA's ALMERA network, which measures environmental radioactivity.
